Our customer is a leading innovator and supplier of equipment for the construction industries. The machinery they make performs hard core, heavy duty cutting for some of the most demanding civil engineering and construction projects.

They approached Hillfoot to help with the material grade selection for a new rock breaking tool which was entering the prototype development stage. Their brief was to source the right steel grades for the initial prototype, followed by options for low and medium production.

After several discussions with the customer to understand their design criteria, we supplied them with a highly modified variant of 817M40 steel, which was chosen because of its resilience and high endurance properties.

Our flexibility of supply options allowed us to supply low volume for the prototype and first article small batches avoiding any initial costly minimum order quantities from mill production.

This is really good example of how we can bring our metallurgical expertise and knowledge of modified grades to help with material selection at a key stage in product development.
