Inspired by the BBC TV series Race Across the World, Sheffield Steelers JFC, the junior football team that we’re proud to sponsor, set themselves the challenge of raising money for Sheffield Children’s Hospital.
We already knew they were a highly competitive bunch, and this was clearly evident on Friday April 11 when they split themselves into two teams to see which one could navigate their way across Sheffield the fastest, and head back to the finishing line at our Herries Lane HQ.
Setting off in glorious sunshine (and unseasonably warm weather), the two teams (Orange & Black) were supported by parents and coaches who manned various checkpoints across the city, extending as far out as Meadowhall Shopping Centre.
A test of navigational prowess, team playing and resourcefulness, each member was equipped with a tram pass, copious amounts of sweets and a set of clues given at each checkpoint. The Black Team (comprising Amos, Ethan, Ed, Ted, Conner, Vinnie and Max) started really strong, and ticked off two landmarks before the Orange team had even got on the tram. Great leadership by Amos and real determination by the whole team.
However, thanks to their knowledge of the landmarks, tram network and close planning of timings, the Orange team (comprising Patrick, Leo, Jacob, Frank, Zac, John and Will) emerged as winners. Great teamwork and an equal contribution from everyone at crucial points throughout the race.
